How to compress images without losing quality
- Pick the right format. WebP is typically 25–35% smaller than JPEG at the same visual quality and is supported by every modern browser. Use JPEG when you need maximum compatibility, and PNG for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges.
- Resize to the size you'll display. A 4000 px photo shown at 1200 px wastes most of its bytes. Resizing is often the biggest single saving.
- Lower quality gradually. Between 70% and 85% most people can't tell the difference, especially on phones. Use the before/after slider to check.
Smaller images make websites load faster, which improves Core Web Vitals and search rankings, and they make email attachments and uploads quicker too.
FAQ
Are my images uploaded?
No. Images are decoded, resized and re-encoded by your browser using the canvas API. Nothing is uploaded, so it's safe for personal photos and confidential documents.
What quality setting should I use?
For photos, 75–85% gives a large size reduction with little visible difference. Go lower for thumbnails and previews. Quality doesn't apply to PNG, which is lossless; resize or convert to WebP to make PNGs smaller.
Why did my PNG get bigger?
PNG is lossless, and re-encoding an already optimized PNG can produce a larger file. When that happens the tool keeps your original. Converting to WebP or JPEG, or reducing the dimensions, usually helps.
Is image metadata removed?
Yes. Re-encoding strips EXIF data such as camera details and GPS location, which is good for privacy when sharing photos online.
