How it works

Type a number in either box and the other updates instantly. Conversions go through a base unit for each category (for example metres for length and kilograms for mass) using exact definitions where they exist, such as 1 inch = 2.54 cm and 1 lb = 0.45359237 kg.

  • Temperature uses offset formulas, for example °F = °C × 9/5 + 32.
  • Data shows both decimal (kB, MB = 1000-based) and binary (KiB, MiB = 1024-based) units, which is why a “500 GB” drive shows as about 465 GiB.
  • You can type simple maths like 5*12 or 3/8.

Your last category and units are remembered in this browser.

FAQ

How accurate are the conversions?

Factors use the exact international definitions where they exist, and results are calculated in double precision, accurate to about 15 significant digits.

What is the difference between MB and MiB?

A megabyte (MB) is 1,000,000 bytes; a mebibyte (MiB) is 1,048,576 bytes (1024²). Storage makers use MB/GB, while many operating systems report MiB/GiB.

Are US and UK gallons different?

Yes. A US gallon is 3.785 litres, while an imperial (UK) gallon is 4.546 litres. Both are listed separately.
